IIRI

The Ilmin International Relations Institute (IIRI) is an affiliated research institute of Korea University. The IIRI has been established to study and recommend appropriate responses to global challenges such as environmental degradation, natural resource depletion, and the widening economic gap between rich and poor nations. The Institute also focuses on problems related to the division and unification of the Korean Peninsula by seeking close cooperation with other institutions at home and abroad, governments, and international organizations. The Institute is expected to become a major force in the international research, exchange and cooperation. It hopes to contribute to the training and education necessary for preparing professionals capable of meeting such global challenges.

IIRI is involved in a variety of programs of international exchange such as the hosting of conferences and seminars of international and domestic issues, policy workshops, distinguished lecture series and academic as well as student exchange programs. Research programs on global issues such as arms control, security, international trade, economic affairs, information and communication are strong on IIRI's agenda, as well as regional issues involving the Korean Peninsula, Asian and the Asia Pacific region.

Along with the emergence of various international issues such as globalization, terrorism, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, IIRI has retained special concerns on NTS issues such as environmental and human security issues. Joint research projects such as 'Environmental Security in East Asia' and 'East Asia Non-Traditional Security', funded by the Ford Foundation, were conducted in cooperation with the United Nations University and renowned scholars from the US, Japan, China and Australia respectively. The IIRI also hosts over 4 international/domestic conferences a year, in which NTS issues are discussed in the meetings convened.

Information from the international exchange are research programs are disseminated through publications put out regularly and made widely available to the public. In addition to individual publications, IIRI publishes its quarterly journal the IIRI review. Such publications are a combination of articles written in both Korean and Englsih languages.
