Our Aim

As a network of research institutes and think tanks in Asia. NTS-Asia aims to do the following :

  1. Develop further the process of networking among scholars and analysts working on NTS issues in the region
  2. To build long-term and sustainable regional capacity for research on NTS issues, and
  3. Mainstream and advance the field of non-traditional security studies in Asia.

IAPS

Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (IAPS), established in 1988, is one of the research institutes in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS). Being an institute specializing in Asia-Pacific studies, it focuses mainly on the issues of contemporary politics, economic development, foreign relations, social and cultural issues, as well as regional integration and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. As a research institute funded by the central government, its research programs are both academic and policy oriented.

Currently, the institute has 60 full-time research fellows, among them, more than half are senior fellows. As a leading research institute in the Asia-Pacific affairs, it maintains wide-ranging connections and cooperation with academic institutions both at home and abroad. It has four research departments:

  • Department of Economic Studies carries out studies in the areas of economic growth, macro-economic policy, finance, foreign trade and investment, regional economic integration and cooperation, with the special focus on East Asian economic development, APEC and East Asian cooperation. It also gives great attention to China's economic relations with the countries in the region.
  • Department of Security & Foreign Relations has major research programs of the department are regional security issues and foreign relations of the countries in the Asia0pacific region, including security issues of North East Asia, South East Asia, US-Japan military alliance, great power relations, as well as non-traditional security. Special attention is given to China's security environment and relations with neighbouring countries.
  • Department of Political & Social Studies makes studies of political systems, political parties, political reform and transformation, social structures and social policies of the countries in the region, major research programs also including social security, income distribution and urbanization.
  • Department of Culture Studies's major research areas are cultural issues relating to political system, social system, historical legacy, as well as the value and ideology. Special programs are arranged for South Asian culture, including some Indian historical literature.

The institute has a standing Editorial Department responsible for the publication of the journal Contemporary Asia-Pacific Studies (monthly, in Chinese). Other publications include books and occasional research reports.
